With Fast Ethernet Adtran equipment you should stick with DAS. We setup an isolated VLAN for an iSCSI connection and have good luck with that but we are in the process of replacing all of the Adtran equipment we inherited with HP ProCurve switches. You can configure your Synology for iSCSI so you can have shared storage and use features like vMotion but as others have already stated you need at least a GB connection and we usually team 2 GB connections for better iSCSI performance.

Pretty sure it is network related, but just wondering how I can improve this? Or if I can?īelow is the server running on local hard disks:īelow is the server running through the Synology box: The hard drives on the local VM Host and the hard drives on the Synology box are both Seagate's same performance, but the Synology box just has more disk space. How can I increase this performance? You can see the 2 images below. But the 2 test servers I set up basically have the same speed, which is drastically lower. One thing I have noticed though is that on the few servers I have running on local disks on those VM hosts, their disk performance seems to be SO MUCH better. I can successfully Vmotion between the two hosts and have no issues with that.

I set up a VMKernal port for Vmotion on both of my VM hosts, and set up two small 40 gb Windows Server 2012 test machines. They each connect via a single cat 5e cable. Both of our VM Hosts and the Synology box are connected to it. Well we have an adtran 3448 and it is our router and switch all in one. It says on the product page and from what I read I can run VM's off of it and that will allow me to use Vmotion, which is very appealing. We currently have a Synology RS2414rp+ and use it as a file storage server, place for backups, and we use the Surveillance Station app to monitor a couple of cameras.
